School Principal, Teachers Suspended for Flogging Students

The Principal of Government Science Secondary School, Nassarawa-Eggon, and three other officials have been suspended for one month for meting out corporal punishment to some students.
The state Commissioner of Education, Mr. Tijjani Ahmed, who confirmed this to Northern City News on Thursday in Lafia, said the state government had banned corporal punishments in public schools across the 13 local government areas and 18 development areas of the state.
Ahmed explained that the decision followed the beating of some students of GSS, Nassarawa-Eggon, the video of which had gone viral in the social media.
He said, “We have constituted a committee to investigate the matter and report to the ministry in the next one week to enable the ministry to take appropriate action.
“Already, three staff members of the school including the Principal have been given a one-month suspension over their involvement in the corporal punishment pending the report of the committee set up by the ministry.”
He explained that the ministry had also written to all public schools informing their managements of the ban on corporal punishment.
He further warned teachers meting out corporal punishment to students to desist “as anyone caught would face disciplinary action.”
The education commissioner stated that “even if teachers would want to punish students for any offence, it should be minor punishment.”
He added that the government would continue to respond to the challenges facing the education sector in the state.
When our correspondent visited the school, the suspended school officials were not on duty, but it was gathered that the management had decided to stop punishing students who resumed late to avoid sanctions.

You May forfeit Your Admission If You Are not Screened by January 15 - LASU Tells New Students

Lagos State University (LASU) Authorities had said on Thursday that students offered provisional admission for the 2017/2018 session who miss the ongoing screening might forfeit their admission.

According to the spokesman of the university, Mr Adekoya Martins, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Martins said that the screening of new students had started on Jan. 2 and would end on Jan. 15.

LASU had offered 3,500 students provisional admission for the 2017/2018 academic session.

NAN reports that the university increased the acceptance fee to be paid by the new students from N10,000 to N20,000 payable once, while its tuition remains N25,000.

Martins said that so far, the turn-out, screening and registration of the new students had been impressive.

He said that candidates offered admission and unable to register before the deadline may only be given grace if they have genuine reasons for their inability to register.

“But for those who refuse to register before the deadline on Jan. 15 without a genuine reason, they may have to forfeit the admission, ‘’ he said.

One of the new students, who pleaded anonymity, however, said some of them had not been able to register since they came around on Tuesday.

The student said there had been challenges in retrieving their data.

Martins, however, said that the institution was aware of the challenges and had directed candidates faced with such problems to appropriate offices.

He said they had been told to lodge their complaints or call some designated phone numbers for help.
Martins also said that the university would soon announce a new date for the matriculation of the new students.

According to him, the earlier proposed date is no longer feasible.

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) Abeokuta Chapter, on Wednesday suspended their strike, which is now over three months old.
The suspension was announced by the chapter’s Chairman, Mr Kola Abiola, after a congress held at the institution’s campus to resolve the crisis between the Ogun State Government and the union.

Abiola stated that the congress decided to call off the strike following the pressure put on it by many concerned prominent personalities in the state.
He, however, said the union was hopeful that its demands would be met by the government to prompt it to conduct the suspended semester examination.

“Today, we had an emergency congress and after several appeals by eminent stakeholders within and outside the state, the congress therefore decided to suspend the strike.
“The government is aware of all our key issues, all the issues which resulted in the strike are all known to the government.
“When the crisis started we actually went to prominent personalities to intervene and now that they have intervened we think it is high time we give government the room for discussion while academic activities go on.
“We have suspended the strike, and it is now left for the management to announce when academic activities will commence,” the chapter chairman said.
Abiola explained that the union had never blackmailed anybody during the crisis, saying that on no occasion did MAPOLY ASUP insulted the state government.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the union and the state government had been at loggerheads over the institution’s upgrading to Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology.
The union also had issues with the government over the planned transfer of some of the institution’s lecturers to the newly-established Ogun State Polytechnic at Ipokia.

The Board disclosed this in a statement, signed by its Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin in Abuja on Tuesday.
According Benjamin the sale of the application documents, which was scheduled to start on Nov. 22 suffered delay due to the publishers’ inability to print the 1.8 million copies of the forms before the deadline.

“The publisher had promised to deliver all the texts for the 2018 candidates on or before Nov.7 but as at close of work today, the publisher has not provided the 1.8m copies required.

ASUU Urged NUC To Dissaprove Additional State Universities.

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, had called on the National Universities Commission, NUC, not to grant operational licence to any state government that approaches it for such.

The union made the call at a press briefing organised by its Lagos zone comprising University of Lagos, Akoka; Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye; Lagos State University, Ojo; Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun Ijebu and the Federal University of Agriculture, FUNAAB, Abeokuta.

The briefing was held at UNILAG with all the chairmen and other officers of the chapters in attendance.
The Lagos zone coordinator of the union, Prof. Olusiji Sowande, who spoke at the briefing, said the group was strongly against the establishment of new state universities at least for now based on the fact that many of the existing ones were in serious deplorable conditions.

He said many states were not economically viable to run one university effectively let alone establish new one.

The ASUU boss, who teaches Animal Science at FUNAAB named Ondo, Edo and Bayelsa states as case studies, arguing that many state governments now relied heavily on money from the TertiaryEducation Trust Fund, TETFund, and the Needs Assessment Intervention Fund to run their universities.

According to him, apart from the deplorable conditions of its university at Akungba-Akoko and Okitipupa, Ondo State government still owed workers three month salaries and yet the state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko went ahead to establish a third university.

“Also, Governor Adams Oshiomole of Edo State who has failed in funding Ambrose Alli University has also established another university, and likewise Governor Seriaki Dickson of Bayelsa State established another university at a time workers at the Niger Delta University had not be paid for five months.

“And one common thread among these new universities is that they are all sited in the communities of governors that brought them to life.

“So, there is no need to establish other universities when the ones on ground lack basic infrastructures and facilities to make them perform as 21st century universities,” he said.
