ASUU Urged NUC To Dissaprove Additional State Universities.

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, had called on the National Universities Commission, NUC, not to grant operational licence to any state government that approaches it for such.

The union made the call at a press briefing organised by its Lagos zone comprising University of Lagos, Akoka; Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye; Lagos State University, Ojo; Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun Ijebu and the Federal University of Agriculture, FUNAAB, Abeokuta.

The briefing was held at UNILAG with all the chairmen and other officers of the chapters in attendance.
The Lagos zone coordinator of the union, Prof. Olusiji Sowande, who spoke at the briefing, said the group was strongly against the establishment of new state universities at least for now based on the fact that many of the existing ones were in serious deplorable conditions.

He said many states were not economically viable to run one university effectively let alone establish new one.

The ASUU boss, who teaches Animal Science at FUNAAB named Ondo, Edo and Bayelsa states as case studies, arguing that many state governments now relied heavily on money from the TertiaryEducation Trust Fund, TETFund, and the Needs Assessment Intervention Fund to run their universities.

According to him, apart from the deplorable conditions of its university at Akungba-Akoko and Okitipupa, Ondo State government still owed workers three month salaries and yet the state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko went ahead to establish a third university.

“Also, Governor Adams Oshiomole of Edo State who has failed in funding Ambrose Alli University has also established another university, and likewise Governor Seriaki Dickson of Bayelsa State established another university at a time workers at the Niger Delta University had not be paid for five months.

“And one common thread among these new universities is that they are all sited in the communities of governors that brought them to life.

“So, there is no need to establish other universities when the ones on ground lack basic infrastructures and facilities to make them perform as 21st century universities,” he said.

I Handed Over Nigeria With The Largest Economy In Africa - Jonathan

Following the accusation by the Buhari led goverment that he inherited a bad economy from his predecessor, former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has responded that he handed over a Nigeria that was economically viable to his successor.

The Buhari-led Federal Government since assumption of power last year, has continued to accuse it’s predecessor of being responsible for the country’s current economic challenges.

But the former President, in his response to these criticisms, maintained that he handed over the best Nigerian government with the largest economy in Africa to Buhari.

In a statement he personally signed, Jonathan said, “I took over a Nigeria that was the second largest economy in Africa with a GDP of $270.5 billion in 2009, I handed over a Nigeria that had grown to become the largest economy in Africa and the 24th largest economy in the World, with a GDP of $574 billion.

“I inherited a Nigeria in which the trains were not working, and handed over a Nigeria in which citizens can safely travel by trains again.

“I inherited a Nigeria that was a net importer of cement, and handed over a Nigeria that is a net exporter of cement.

“In 2009, the richest Nigerian was the 5th richest man in Africa, but I handed over a Nigeria that produced the richest man in Africa.”

Federal Government Set For Re-screening of 2000 Immigration Recruits From August 29

The Federal Government has said it would commence the re-screening of 2,000 recruits of the Nigeria Immigration Service NIS who were “dispersed” after being trained and issued employment letters in February last year.

As reported by the Vanguard, the statement was issued on Monday in Abuja by the spokesman of the NIS, Ekpedeme King, saying that the decision was reached in the aftermath of an emergency meeting of the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration, and Prisons Services Board (CDFIPB) on the 11th of August 2016.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) wishes to inform the 2000 applicants for employment into the Service who were irregularly issued letters of employment in February, 2015 that the Federal Government has approved the review of the case.

“Following an emergency meeting of the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration, and Prisons Services Board (CDFIPB) on the 11th of August 2016, the following guidelines were issued for the screening of the applicants:

“Consequent on the above, applicants whose names are listed in the NIS website: www.immigration.gov.ng are requested to report to the NIS Headquarters Abuja with their academic certificates, birth certificate, previous employment records (if any), indigene certificates (originals and photocopies), two passport photographs, and in batches according to the time-table”.

By the schedule, Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II, ASI2 (CONPASS 08) from all the states between Abia and Jigawa in alphabetical order would take their turn on August 29 while those that fall between Kaduna and Zamfara states would have theirs on August 30.

For Assistant Inspectors of Immigration, AII (CONPASS 06) those from Abia to Jigawa state would sit for the screening on August 31st while those from Kaduna to Zamfara would have theirs on September 1st.

For Immigration Assistants IA1 - IA3 (CONPASS 3,4,5), those from Abia to Edo states would be screened on September 2, Ekiti to Kwara, September 3 and Lagos to Zamfara, September 4.

“The general public should please note that the exercise is not a call for fresh recruitment. Therefore, no application for recruitment should be forwarded to the NIS”, the service warned.

After the botched 2014 recruitment into the service the then president, Goodluck Jonathan, instituted a committee to assist the CDFIPB conduct a fresh recruitment. The exercise has since been bugged with controversies following the dispersal of the 2,000 fresh recruits at the advent of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
